April is math awareness month
We all know that I get carried away with the weather. Especially in the winter with the snow storms. Well today I realized that I am not alone with interest in the weather. The month of April is considered math awareness month and a theme has been chosen for this year. "The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announce that the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2009, is Mathematics and Climate." I took that quote from the web site http://www.mathaware.org/. You should check it out some time. I am sure that we will incorporate some weather activities into our class in the month of April. If you have any ideas, let me know.

I love snow and math is interesting so I think the 2 will go good together. I am looking forward to incorporating the weather into math and seeing how this will work. I wish I had good ideas to help with this, but I am at a loss to say how we could have weather and math related. I am looking forward to this.
WOW! i didnt even know there was such a thing as math awareness month! how exciting! im also excited to do activites with climate in april. As long as it isnt snow i will be happy. Because i think by April i will be ready for sun and not snow.
The theme for math awareness month is great. There is so much math one can do in weather and especially this year with all the snow we've been getting it should be very interesting!
It sounds like you had a hand in deciding the theme. I hope we get to do something interesting in class for weather activities.
I am the same as Colleen in that I didnt know there was a math awareness month. But it seems appropriate since theres an awareness month for everything else, and math is such a big part of life. I think it will be interesting to combine weather and math. On the news you can see the numbers but you don't really know how they calculate all the complicated stats. What we learn could make the weather report more interesting.
i think that its wicked cool the math can be connected to the weather. I feel like the weather this year has been crazy so the math on it should be fun.
The weather related activities sound like fun! I didn't know that there was a math awareness month either. I'm not sure exactly what we could do for activities but maybe something about tornados or hurricanes and their speed?

Math really is everywhere! It is good that you finally found something to incorporate math into weather! your two favorite things!
I think its great that there is a math awareness month and it would be really interesting to relate it to weather. There are so many different types of weather and all the predictions have to do with math.
I like the idea of math awarness month. I also reconize that math is a part of everything. However, I just don't really care for the wether systems and how it all works. We have a course here that teaches how weather works and if i wanted to know more about weather id take that course.
Are we going to do Pi Day this year? 3/14 is a Saturday though...
I think the theme for math awareness month should provide some interesting applications of math. I think it would be cool if we could incorporate percentages of rainfall or snowfall into some math problems. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what we can do with math and the weather.

I agree with Julia. I never actually thought of math regarding the "predicting" of the weather. Hmmmmm.
i think thats really cool that theres a math awareness month and that they relate things to math like the climate because i dont think most people realize how often math is used weather. and i agree with kevin a feild trip would be really fun. :)
I didn't know about math awareness month either, but it sounds like fun and the activities that we can do with weather sound interesting. I agree with Colleen, I will definitely be ready for sun instead of snow by April.
I was just checking out the link to the website you posted with this blog and i thought it was pretty cool. It made me wonder about global warming and how scientists can use math to predict the rising temperatures around the world! But...i am sick of the snow now and want spring to come so i can start going outside more often. A snowday would be nice though...
I think that math can be attributed to everything whether it be weather or making a web page. I like Leah ahd others, like math and did not know that April was math awarness month. I hope we do fun things with math in April.

I love Kevin's idea about the field trip! Doesn't it rain a lot in April? Maybe we could do something that included rain.. I don't know just throwing things out there. =)

FIELD TRIP! haha I'm with Kevin and Priya on that one. I think math and climate is perfect for this class since so many of us seem to be interested in the weather. I can't wait to see what activities you find.
I agree with Kate and Chad; I'm excited to see what weather related activities you'll find. Weather should be an interesting topic to relate to math.
I, like Erica and Colleen, was not aware that there was a math awareness month, but I am glad there is one.

I feel that an "awareness month" justifies neglecting that individual subject for the rest of the year. It is funny how previous blogs have been about weather and that is also the topic
I agree with Jess Sumner that math is used a lot in weather, and it'll be interesting to find out what activities in pre-calc. we will do that relate to it. I did not check out the website yet but I might do that later if I don't forget haha.

Why is April math awareness month?? People want to be outside enjoying the new spring weather, not punching numbers into their TI-83s! Math awareness month should be a month where no one wants to leave the house. That way they can enjoy solving their math problems and not worry about planning a bball game with their friends!
I agree with chad; I hope there are a few good items planned, but if not math day is coming up!!!!

Joe its math awareness because all of the other months are taken up by other things. It was all that was left.
I never knew that April was math awareness month but i really like the idea of having a math scavenger hunt to celebrate it.

I say we get all the members in Mu Alpha Theta to wear a shirt with a number from pi on it, then we all line up and take a picture!
